Raise your hand if you have ever been on a diet...or many for that matter! Well, you're not alone. It turns out that 45 million Americans go on a diet each year and spend an estimated $30 billion on diet products. According to the latest weight-loss research, 95% of dieters end up regaining the weight they lost within two years.
Hello Everyone,
If we're going to be completely honest with ourselves, most diet programs currently on the market work....but for how long? Anyone who has been on any kind of diet and followed the rules of the diet has experienced some short term success. Whether it's a month, three, six or even a year. But, what happens after that period of success?
There is no mistake that the diet industry is a multi-billion dollar industry. Over the past twenty years, the diet industry has tripled its gross annual income to approximately $60 billion. All different diets come with a host of different promises.
So, what is the real issue with diets?
Let's take a look at the first three letters in diet...DIE. All diets eventually die. They are not sustainable. So you, the individual on the diet does not fail, although diets can set you up to feel like a failure. Diets fail YOU!
Many diets are calorie restrictive, cut out important food groups and nutrients or can leave you feeling deprived. This can lead to binge eating and other food cravings. Calorie restriction can lead to slower metabolism, increased hunger hormone (gherlin) and decreased satiety. Dieting can also preoccupy the mind with food.
Not only that, diets are made for the masses. They are not individualized and do not understand you or your body's unique needs.
Unfortunately, when people go on diet after diet, they tend to keep chasing the "magic" diet. The one with latest new promises of guaranteed weight loss or the latest pill or supplement. Look at what's happening with Ozempic right now.
In addition, many people focus on short-term goals. Perhaps, they have an upcoming reunion, wedding or vacation to look their best for, so they go on a diet, lose weight, and then all that weight comes back. I'm not talking about some, I'm talking about all.
Given enough time, diets fail.
Let me share the key factors to focus on for long term weight loss success. Sustainability and root causes.
Why?
Sooner or later life catches up to you. An unresolved childhood trauma, stress at work, or a change in lifestyle can all trigger old eating patterns and habits.
Diets do not address root causes.
So many people who go on one diet find themselves in a vicious cycle of perpetual dieting. They blame themselves, can't understand why it's now harder to lose weight than before and why they gained even more weight back.
Sustainability and Root Causes is the Key to Weight Loss Success
Why would anyone go through all that effort of losing weight only to gain it back? Well no-one would and there is alot more to it. Understanding the concept of sustainability and root causes is key.
It may only take a change in your schedule or some minor change in your lifestyle that sets you back into old eating patterns. What you need is a breakthrough plan. Understanding root causes, your state and story is key to the process. Then putting a strategy into action. Otherwise, you may find yourself on a vicious diet cycle.
