4 Tips for a Healthy Memorial Day


Memorial Day weekend is here, and this typically marks the official kick off to summer. With that comes barbecues, cocktails, and parties. So, I'd like to share some tips with you to enjoy the holiday with friends and family, while staying healthy too!

Stay hydrated--Water makes up for more than half your body weight. So make sure to drink plenty of water throughout the day. Start with a glass or two-first thing in the morning, and have one to two glasses 15 minutes prior to meals. Staying hydrated helps with fatigue and people often reach for food when they are thirsty.

Nourish your body--There's nothing wrong with enjoying some of your favorite treats, but consider having plenty of veggie friendly options. This will help avoid overindulging on meat and desserts and leave you feeling great after meals! Use this plate tool as a helpful guide for your meals. Fill half your plate with low glycemic, colorful veggies. (Low glycemic options include almost all veggies except potatoes, peas, sweet corn, plantains, and squash) Low glycemic veggies are loaded with vitamins, minerals, fiber, and are low in calories. They help stabilize your blood sugar levels and keep you full. Fill the other 50% of your plate with 25% protein and 25% whole grains or higher glycemic vegetables like sweet potato. Enjoy fruit for dessert. Choose fresh berries, watermelon, kiwi, and mango. It's delicious, refreshing, sweet, and satisfying!

Have a mock-tail--Instead of a cocktail, enjoy a mock-tail! Mix up some sparkling water with a splash of fresh cranberry juice and lime. Or a mock mojito with fresh mint leaves, sparkling water, lime, and agave. It feels festive and dresses up like your favorite cocktail. If you do opt for a cocktail, skip the sugary mixes. Have a vodka or tequila on the rocks or with fresh lime juice, or a glass of wine. Make sure to drink a glass of water between drinks to avoid dehydration.

Gratitude--Have an attitude of gratitude! Gratitude nourishes the mind and body with positive energy. The fulfillment we receive from spending time with family and friends cannot be replaced by food. So don't forget to enjoy the company you are with and get grateful.
